A Few of Our Favorite Things from the Midwest

It’s mid-December—a time of year when many people send greetings to friends and family. I personally look forward to getting cards and letters in the mail, especially  those full-page  letters recapping the kids’ accomplishments, new pets, and family vacations.

Yes, I know that holiday letters aren’t as popular as they once were, especially given our ability for instant sharing via social media. But still, I believe they provide an opportunity to pause and find gratitude and joy. On behalf of the entire Midwest Team, join me in recapping a few of our favorite things.

Collaboration: In January, the team gathered in Alton, Illinois for a staff retreat, where we explored the concept of collaboration. We set the stage internally with our team and then heard from farmers and partners to better understand how we can support their goals.

Building Better Soil: We worked with farmers integrating rotational grazing, went beneath the surface in a soil pit, and advocated for conservation practice funding.

Leaving a Legacy: Protecting Farmland is at the heart of our work at AFT and we were inspired by the story of the Regnery’s and their decision to protect Whitefish Bay Farms with a conservation easement. Their love for the land is truly remarkable and leaves a legacy that will benefit generations to come.

Celebrations: We joined colleagues and friends to celebrate achievements of the Illinois Sustainable Ag Partnership, immersed ourselves in the sights, sounds, and tastes of the Kansas City Farmers Market, and honored the role of women landowners and farmers.

Innovation: Our Smart Solar℠ team is providing much needed leadership in Agrivoltaics, convening landowners and business leaders, and identifying ways to grow renewable energy while strengthening farm viability and protecting healthy soil.

Farmers: Without a doubt, the best days of the past year have been spent in the field. This includes visiting farms to learn with others, building things together, discovering things together, enjoying animal antics, and stopping to smell the flowers

Thank you for your collaboration and support. Best wishes for a joyful and prosperous New Year. We are looking forward to continuing this work with you!
