Farmer Relief Fund

Update: Thank you for your interest in AFT’s Farmer Relief Fund. We are honored to report that starting on May 1, 2020, we are making 1,000 grants of $1,000 to farmers across the country in need. That’s $1 million direct to farmers thanks to our generous donors and supporters.

That’s the good news. But we received more than 5,000 applications to the Farmer Relief Fund, meaning we were only able to fund about 20% of the requests we received. We’re not done fighting for farmers though. Over the next few weeks, we’ll continue to raise money to give away to the applicant pool. The more money we raise, the more farmers we can help.

If you’re able, it’s not too late to give to the Fund! Every dollar we raise will go directly to farmers meaning you can still have a major impact. Give today

Because it’s simple: No Farms No Food®

The coronavirus pandemic is impacting businesses that rely on direct contact with their customers, including farmers and ranchers that primarily sell their products through farmers markets and to restaurants, schools, and other institutions.

In fact, a new report estimates that local and regional food systems could lose up to $1.3 billion between just March and May of this year.

To help directly support farmers impacted by the current crisis, American Farmland Trust is launched a new Farmer Relief Fund in March 2020. 100% of donations to the fund will go directly to farmers.

About

  • AFT’s Farmer Relief Fund will award farmers with cash grants of up to $1,000 each to help them weather the current storm of market disruptions caused by the coronavirus crisis.
  • Initially, eligible applicants include any small and mid-size direct-market producers. These are defined as producers with annual gross revenue of between $10,000 and $1 million from sales at farmers markets and/or direct sales to restaurants, caterers, schools, stores, or makers who use farm products as inputs.
  • The application is simple and easy to complete but includes sufficient detail to ensure AFT is awarding producers that have the greatest needs. Applicants will be asked to estimate their financial loss.
  • An initial application round extended until April 23, with grants beginning to be made May 1.
