Five Generations of Community Service at Fisher Farms

“Farming is rooted in our family’s DNA,” says Lennon Fisher Jr., the fifth generation of his family to operate Fisher Farms in Alachua County, Florida. Historically, the farm raised livestock and produce. Now they specialize in Southern fruit and vegetable crops. As producers who grow year-round, there is always something going on at Fisher Farms.

For Lennon, the work is hard but rewarding. He views nurturing plants into food as respectable, peaceful and empowering. His dedicated customers are more than just a financial transaction. Lennon wants to help people eat healthier, and in turn provides added  hands-on care such as picked to order produce and door to door deliveries.

Like most farmers selling direct to consumers, the Covid-19 pandemic hit Fisher Farms hard.  

A Brighter Future Fund grant helped fund a new fencing project at the farm to keep their ever-popular crops safe from the critters that would like to share in the farm’s abundance. The fencing will ensure that the Fishers’ time stewarding the crops also reaps a financial benefit.

American Farmland Trust, with the help of Tillamook Creamery, launched the Brighter Future Fund to support farmers in the face of pressing challenges like climate change and COVID-19.

Five generations of farmers is uniquely special in today’s social landscape. As housing developments and stores continue to expand in Alachua County, farms like Fisher Farms provide an especially important benefit to the community—in fresh food, beautiful landscapes and environmental services.
