American Farmland Trust to Host Agricultural Water Management Workshop in Salinas, California

SALINAS, CA. – Today, American Farmland Trust, the organization behind the national movement No Farms No Food®, announces an agricultural water management workshop -in collaboration with Alba Organics and the Farmer Veteran Coalition- that will provide the opportunity to learn how to adopt best practices  proven to be most efficient according to the region’s crop and water needs. This event is the first of a series of workshops under AFT’s Underserved Farmer Outreach Program to provide outreach and hands-on training to underserved farmers in California.

“By employing an outreach and interactive training strategy, the program supports and empowers underserved farmers in the adoption of best management practices for soil and water resources,” said Kara Heckert-California, AFT California Director.

She continued, “The program brings together underrepresented farmers, new farmers, economically disadvantaged farmers, and farmers whose primary language is not English, to participate in a discussion around sustainable and economical agricultural practices, emphasizing regionally-specific knowledge.”

In the last agricultural census, 19 percent of California producers identified themselves as people of color. The data also showed that farmers of color tend to own less land, make less money, and receive less government support than their white counterparts.

This workshop provides information exchange and participatory education among diverse communities representing the future of California agriculture. Funding for American Farmland Trust’s Underserved Farmer Outreach Program was made possible by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Agricultural Marketing Service through grant AM180100XXXXG003. Its contents are solely the responsibility of the authors and do not necessarily represent the official views of the USDA.

American Farmland Trust is the only national organization that takes a holistic approach to agriculture, focusing on the land itself, the agricultural practices used on that land, and the farmers and ranchers who do the work. AFT launched the conservation agriculture movement and continues to raise public awareness through our No Farms, No Food message. Since our founding in 1980, AFT has helped permanently protect over 6.5 million acres of agricultural lands, advanced environmentally-sound farming practices on millions of additional acres and supported thousands of farm families.
