Kiros Hadgu

Senior Soil Health and Biochar Scientist

Kiros Hadgu joined AFT in January of 2025, bringing over 12 years of expertise in climate science, soil health, biochar, sustainable land management, agroecology, and project management. He has extensive experience in research, outreach, extension, fundraising, and facilitating the adoption of innovative practices through farmer-to-farmer networks. Kiros has worked on policy impact and supported small-scale and underserved farmers. In his role as a Senior Soil Health and Biochar Scientist for the national Climate and Soil Health Team, Kiros leads program science and implementation of soil health and biochar as a tool in soil health management systems. He leads research, data analysis, modeling, and publications tailored to diverse audiences, while also advancing transformational implementation efforts, decision support tools, and scaling initiatives. Kiros advises on these topics across projects, contributing to the organization's mission of promoting regenerative agriculture and climate resilience.

Prior to joining AFT, Kiros held senior positions at CIFOR-ICRAF, where he led programs in soil health, agroforestry, and land restoration across East and Southern Africa. His work included managing multi-stakeholder partnerships, fundraising for restoration projects, and delivering measurable results in climate adaptation and resilience. Kiros holds a Master’s degree in Ecological Agriculture, and a Ph.D. in Production Ecology and Resource Conservation from Wageningen University in the Netherlands.
