The Practice of Showing Up
Self-care isn’t a side practice for farmer Samantha Otto; it’s integrated into her daily routine. As a grower, herbalist, and founder of The Woven Trifecta in Whitehall, Michigan, she approaches farm work and well-being with the same intention: tending to what sustains life.
“It’s how I create a sustainable rhythm,” she explains. “A balance of work, rest, and joy that nourishes my personal well-being and strengthens my commitment to caring for the land and the community I serve.”
Her self-care rituals are simple and consistent. Samantha pauses for yoga, meditation, and walks in nature, small acts that help regulate her nervous system and reconnect her with her surroundings. She also relies deeply on her relationships. Whether it’s sharing a meal with other farmers, swapping stories and strategies, or grabbing coffee with a friend, she finds grounding in community. These moments of connection help carry her through the stress of the season, reminding her she’s not doing this work alone.
With support from Real Farmer Care, Samantha plans to purchase a one-month unlimited yoga pass at her local studio to return to a practice that once held an essential place in her life. “Yoga has been a transformative practice for me,” she explains. “I used to attend multiple classes a week, but as I transitioned to owning and managing my farm, time and financial constraints made it difficult to continue.”
“This award would significantly ease the financial burden, allowing me to commit to a month of classes and rediscover the benefits yoga brings to my life and work. My goal is to use this month as a catalyst to reset my nervous system and reestablish a sustainable self-care routine before the busy growing season begins.”
Samantha’s approach is holistic and grounded in the belief that care is ongoing. “Self-care in farming isn’t just about taking breaks,” she says. “It’s about creating rhythms and routines that support well-being—and recognizing that tending to oneself is as important as tending to the land.”
