Water Initiative

Working with the conservation community to find common-sense solutions that benefit the environment—and us all.

Water quality is at risk in iconic waterways across America. Pollution comes from many sources, unfortunately including farm soil and nutrients—mainly nitrogen and phosphorus from fertilizers and livestock manure— washing off farm fields into waterways, where they can cause problems like algae blooms, fish kills, and dead zones.

While runoff from agricultural fields plays a major role in the problem, AFT recognizes that farmers can be enthusiastic partners in the fight to keep our water clean. By optimizing their production decisions to build up soil health in their fields, farmers offer a win-win solution: increased economic gains for the business and improved water resource gains for the environment.

AFT's Role in Improving Water Resources

Collaborating with Field to Market to Develop Meaningful Water Quality and Soil Carbon Tools

AFT participates in the Metrics Committee and Education Committee. We help analyze options for various tools and methodologies for inclusion in FTM’s Field Print Calculator to quantify water quality outcomes of farm conservation practices. We also identify information needs and help ensure that Field to Market project information shared with farmers is easy-to-read and actionable.

As a representative from the civil society sector, AFT is aiming to ensure that farmers are appropriately supported in their adoption of the conservation practices that are desired by companies to satisfy corporate water and climate sustainability goals. And that Field to Market projects achieve new practice adoption and measurable environmental outcomes.
