Land Transfer Training Curriculum

The Transitioning Land to a New Generation – Land Transfer Training Curriculum is a collection of resources for educators and service providers who support farmers and ranchers to transition their land to a new steward.

These adaptable resources are designed to support aspiring producers and retiring landholders who are planning a farm or ranch transfer. The key goal of the series is to foster healthy communication and relationships throughout the process.

Todos los recursos también están disponibles en español.

Curriculum Overview

The Land Transfer Training is a performance-based learning curriculum.

  • The Training Manual describes the anatomy of the curriculum, includes a Planning Agenda worksheet, provides recipes for activities, and summarizes a series of transfer case studies available to use.

  • The Course Outcome Summary provides a snapshot the learning goals for each module.

  • The Land Transfer Case Studies Series supplement the curriculum materials. These audio essays, share firsthand experiences with different perspectives on land transfer and the themes that arise during land transition.

  • The Farm or Ranch Transfer Plan is a collection of worksheets designed to outline the steps and information involved in a farm transfer situation.

Modules

The Land Transfer Training is made up of five modules. Each module contains a teaching plan, student learning plan, PowerPoint presentation with notes, information sheets, worksheets, and resource lists.

This project was led by AFT's Farms for a New Generation with support from our funders.

Transitioning Land to a New Generation was funded by a Beginning Farmer and Rancher Development Program grant (award #2020 - 49400 – 3325) from the United States Department of Agriculture/National Institute of Food and Agriculture with additional support from Farm Credit and the members of AFT.

This 3-year project created the Land Transfer Training curriculum to help foster healthy communication skills between landowners and land seekers and support a network of ag service providers.
