Eric and Virginia Carlberg were awarded a Dairy Forward microgrant for farm transfer and succession planning from American Farmland Trust and Chobani, which will help them to identify possible purchase avenues for the remainder of the 50/50 dairy farm partnership between Eric and his father on their family operated farm in Jamestown, New York. The Carlberg’s milk 120 Holsteins and raise their own forages and heifer replacements and do custom cropping. Eric and Virginia have been involved in the dairy farm since 2009, when Eric became a partner, and prior to that Eric milked his own herd of cows since 2004. The Carlberg’s are working with Randy Risjan, a financial consultant from Farm Credit East, to identify the best avenue for the next generation of the family to purchase the land and the remaining half of the operating partnership and to explore diversification strategies.
