Biography

A longtime friend and champion of American Farmland Trust, Brian joined its staff in October of 2022, after more than 2 years of continuous contract work with the organization’s Land Protection Team, Farm Legacy Program, and the National Agricultural Land Network (NALN.) His primary role will be in managing the acquisition of agricultural conservation easements and farmland, as well as projects involving their donation through the Farmland Legacy Program. Brian will lead the administration of AFT’s Love Fund for Michigan, including work to advance Buy-Protect-Sell projects in the state. His work will primarily be focused in Michigan and the surrounding Great Lakes Region. Born and raised in SW Michigan, Brian has a Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy from Western Michigan University, with a Certificate in Professional and Applied Ethics. Prior to his work with AFT, he served as the Farmland Program Manager for the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy, Leelanau Conservancy, and aided in the development and administration of local farmland protection programs in the greater Traverse City region of NW Lower Michigan. Brian has more than 30 years of experience in land protection and stewardship, including more than 20 years of experience in farmland protection. He currently serves as a gubernatorial appointee to MI’s Agricultural Preservation Fund Board.
