Elena Bischak

Elena Bischak is a fourth year PhD candidate at UC Merced in the laboratory of Dr. Rebecca Ryals. She is currently working on an AFT-UC Merced collaboratively designed Healthy Soils project investigating the effect of biochar on almond orchard soil health and greenhouse gas fluxes. She is interested in regenerative agricultural practices that rebuild soil health and sequester carbon. She is particularly interested in recoupling sanitation and agriculture to close nutrient cycles, with a focus on urine fertilization. Prior to grad school, Elena lived in Senegal for two years as a Peace Corps volunteer. She received a Bachelor of Science in biology from the College of William & Mary.
