Mark manages AFT’s Upper Scioto River Watershed Project, which is focused on improving drinking water and farm profitability by, among other things, establishing a Payment for Ecosystem Services, or PES, program to attract new sources of funding and pay farmers for environmental performance.
Mark is a professional agronomist with more than 30 years of experience working with farmers, agricultural, environmental, and conservation organizations, governmental agencies, university researchers, and extension educators. Prior to joining AFT, Mark had his own consulting firm, Land Stewards, which helped to ensure farmland was productive, in harmony with conservation and environmental goals, and compliant with federal and state regulations. Mark began his career as an agricultural extension agent, then served as the agricultural liaison for the director of Ohio EPA and later, at the Ohio Department of Agriculture, established a new regulatory program for Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations. Mark and his family live on a small farm north of Columbus, Ohio. He spent two-years in southern Africa (Botswana) working on a USDA development project. Mark has a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in agronomy from the Ohio State University and is credentialed as a Certified Crop Advisor and Certified Conservation Planner.
